Overview

AiTou Technology is building a job searching platform that is customized for international job-seekers.
Working alongside a team of 4 other designers we were tasked with the redesign of AiTou’s website with the goal of adopting and retaining users.
Qualitative and quantitative research was conducted with users to assess their pain points with the existing website in order for us to identify any areas where we could improve upon designs. This led to the delivery of a completely redesigned website, as well as the addition of a Resources Page.

Investigating the Problem

International applicants need a platform that helps them quickly find jobs that sponsor work visas.

How might we better connect international applicants to companies wanting to employ the best talents from all over the world?

Current State of AiTou

  • In order to understand what current users are experiencing we decided to start our research with an evaluation using Abby’s Heuristics to find strengths and weaknesses in the site.

AiTou’s current designs scored lowest in these 3 categories:
    - Findable
    - Valuable
    - Delightful

  • We compared AiTou’s offerings to 5 competitors in the space to understand where they stand in this industry and how the product could best add value to applicants.

A feature analysis of these competitors was also conducted comparing a total of 35 features.

Comparing features allows us to see how AiTou stacks up against these competitors and will help us craft potential features to implement into AiTou’s redesign.

  • The team then conducted 10 (20 minute) user interviews over Zoom in order to gather insights about the problems international applicants face during the job hunt and application process.

    Takeaways from these interviews include:
    - Users need a job page that adapts to their needs
    - Users are frustrated by the lack of transparency on postings
    - International applicants are limited by current resources available

  • We conducted testing in order to evaluate the current usability of AiTou’s website.

To do this, we measured the easiness rating, time on task, and success rating of 5 participants who ran through these 3 tasks:

Task 1: Please search for more information about career opportunities at Netflix.

Task 2: You want to learn more information about a full stack developer job at Robert Half. information you need by using the website’s navigation.

Task 3: Please look for an internship opportunity in Data Science - Customer Success at Zoom.

When measuring these tasks, we found an average:
    - Time on Task = 1 min 29 sec
    - Success Rating = 60%
    - Easiness Rating = 3.4 / 5

Who Are Our Users?

Using the data collected from various methods of research a persona was created to help understand users better.
Meet Priscilla.

Meet Priscilla

  • She is a 27 year old Indonesian currently living in Pennsylvania

  • She has 90 days to find employment in the U.S.

  • Looking for a degree in Software Engineering

  • Currently searching for companies that are sponsoring visas

  • She can’t find many resources that help international applicants

What did we Learn about the Problem?

What do International Applicants Need?

International Applicants benefit from having a streamlined process when looking for jobs.

International Applicants need a job search platform that can be navigated with ease.

Applicants struggle with job postings that lack sufficient information and transparency regarding visa requirements and sponsorships.

Job Postings need to be fully transparent about work authorizations and requirements.

There are few resources available for international applicants regarding the job hunt and work sponsorship process.

A resource providing detailed information about finding and acquiring positions in the U.S.

Designing a Solution

Home Page

  • Existing Home Page

Users were confused about what AiTou was at first impression. New Grad and Intern banner gave users the impression that this website was only for current or recent college students

  • Redesigned Home Page

New composition showcases AiTou’s unique value to international applicants. A rotating carousel is now the home for featured pages or news.

Jobs Page

  • Existing Design

The current layout of job postings does not allow for users to seamlessly view job descriptions while also browing different options. Users must click into and out of each post to view details.

  • Proposed Design

We decided to shift the view of job posts to the left column while the description is displayed to the right. This gives users the ability to browse various jobs while still viewing job descriptions.

Companies Page

  • Existing Design

The current design displays companies in an infinite scrolling list and does not provide any filters that would make the browsing experience more comprehensive.

  • Proposed Design

Page now provides information such as which companies are the most international-friendly and which companies have given out the most sponsorships in the previous year. This allows users to make more informed choices about where to apply.

New Additions

  • Company Comparison Feature

The comparison feature was included to aid users in their job search. Users can view and compare companies sponsorship history and more.

  • Resources Page

This page would provide users resources such as articles that contain relevant and valuable information regarding the international applicant process.

  • F.A.Q. Page

Visitors can find the answers to commonly asked questions regarding AiTou.

The Results Are In

Once our designs were finalized we ran the same usability test that we used when testing the existing website.

Usability Test Tasks:

Task 1: Please search for more information about career opportunities at Netflix.

Task 2: You want to learn more information about a full stack developer job at Robert Half. information you need by using the website’s navigation.

Task 3: Please look for an internship opportunity in Data Science - Customer Success at Zoom.

The time it takes for users to complete tasks using the proposed design had decreased at an average of 58 seconds

Average rates of success for each task had increased by 23%.

Users had responded that completing tasks using the proposed design was easier by an average of 1.4 points on a 1-5 scale of easiness ratings.

Moving Forward

We were really happy with the results of usability testing and how the hi-fi mockup performed.

Based on what our testers said, we would like to do the following to continue improving the website:

  • Continue working on a global search bar

  • Examine further how the new features are performing in additional rounds of testing.

  • Continue working on the resources page, referral feature, and the comparison card

I plan on reaching out to the AiTou team in the near future to follow up on if these designs were able to be integrated.
